The theme of the exhibition revolves around our own cultural folklore. They requested a maximum of two pieces so I decided to do a piece for both my Black side and my Korean side!
This is the Seoksu Totem which represents the traditional Korean mythical beasts carved from stone that were placed in tombs as a form of protection.
They could be found in funerary customs of the Eastern Han dynasty.

And this is the Sankofa Totem.
Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana meaning “to retrieve” or “go back and get“.
It also refers to the Bono Adinkra symbol that is either represented as a stylised heart shape, or a bird with its head turned backwards while its feet face forward carrying a precious egg in its mouth.
Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which translates as: “It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.”
The sankofa bird itself can be found in traditional Akan art, and has also been adopted as an important symbol in Black and African Diaspora communities to represent the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future.
I learned about the concept of Sankofa a few years ago when I was Going Through It™ in my life, and it really helped me feel connected to my Black/African/wherever the Black half of me is originally from and our collective community.
It's definitely my favourite piece of 2025 so far.
